Attacking the poor with public transit
This week, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) announced a price hike. Cash fares will increase from $2.25 to $2.50, and a block if 10 tickets will rise from $19.00 to $20.00. The monthly Metropass price remains the same at aound $98.00.
This increase amounts to an attack on the working poor (and the just plain poor) in the city. The people who cannot afford an unlimited monthly pass are being forced to cough up extra cash when they may not be in a position to do so.
Even worse, the same working poor are being targeted with a new $30.00 weekly pass that, if purchased enough to cover a month, actually costs more than a monthly pass. Toronto's mayor David Miller called this situation an "exciting opportunity".
If the price increase is necessary for the TTC to continue operating, then the people who can shoulder the burden should be the ones to do so. I would gladly pay an extra $2.00 on my monthly pass i could prevent an increase to cash and ticket fares.
