Pulstation 2 at the AGO

Today the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Drake Hotel hosted a stunt-painting of its main entrance.

From the AGO's website:

Pioneering a new method of painting, New York-based artist Fabian Marcaccio will direct a squad of eight painters using paintball techniques in the rapid execution of a large scale art work that will transform the walls of Weston Hall, the main entrance to the AGO. South American composer Claudio Baroni has written an original score for this event, to be performed by two trumpet and two percussion musicians, as well as the painter-shooters whose firing guns also function as instruments. The performance will be documented in real time by on-site journalists, including Peter Goddard of the Toronto Star whose text will be simultaneously projected on a screen for the audience to witness.

In addition to the details quoted, Peter Goddard at the Toronto Star says that "[the paintballers] will know when to fire by way of a signal sent to their MP3 players". Ugh, it's so hip you could choke on it!

I watched the event via the live webcast and took a bunch of screenshots. The whole thing was pretty boring, but it was at least a novel way to decorate some walls.

The work is scheduled for removal later this summer when Transformation AGO begins.

Long and boring aside, it's still pretty cool. And the news cast didn't show the finished piece. It's kind of neat.

More like art for the tasteless and rednecked if you ask me. The fact that the Toronto Star was reporting kind of sums it all up, doesn't it?

Heh, what I meant was that it's "trying so hard to be hip that you could choke on it". Having a co-presentation with The Drake seals the deal.
